Lumenas: Efficient, Agile & Innovative
Formed in 2005, Lumenas Animation Studios established a base of operations in downtown Salt Lake City to take advantage of lower operating costs and a large talent pool of digital artists residing within the state. Housed within a 50,000 square foot studio, Lumenas provides a full-service solution for feature animation, visual effects, and film property development —from the basic concept to the final film print.
Lumenas Animation Studios is poised to enter the market with the following competitive advantages:
- Lumenas has attracted leadership from Pixar, DreamWorks, and Disney, and has over a hundred artists from all over the world on site.
- Lumenas uses a proprietary ALL-MOTION™ production approach, enabling greater efficiency and creativity.
- The cost of hiring local artists and animators is approximately 27-48% less than in Los Angeles, San Francisco, or New York.
- Operations, facility leasing, and general overhead costs are 50% less than studios located in larger cities.
- Utilizing an innovative mix of practical sets and digital characters, Lumenas has created a stunning new visual style.
A Three-Pronged Strategy
Leveraging the competitive advantages listed above, Lumenas is moving forward with a three-pronged development strategy:
- Dramatically reduce the fixed costs of producing a world-class animated film for theatrical release.
- Leverage the relatively low cost of living and family-centric culture of Utah to recruit top artisans from around the world.
- Release one, high quality, low-cost, family friendly animated feature every two years, followed by an aggressive franchise component.
The Legend of Santa Claus™ will be the first film shot in the Lumenas production slate that utilizes this groundbreaking technique. The story development team has gone to great lengths to identify stories that are entertaining and reach a broad age demographic.
Labor and Overhead Drive Up Production Costs The traditionally high cost of studio-produced animated films can be attributed to two key drivers:
- 75% of production costs typically come from labor expenses. Thus the higher the cost of living in a particular area, the more expensive a film becomes.
- Studios carry a tremendous overhead, supporting multiple projects at any given time.
Many such projects (often as low as one in ten) will ever make it out of the studio and into theatres. If the high price of overhead and labor could be reduced, the cost of bringing a new animated film to market could be greatly reduced.
Enter Lumenas Studios, nestled beneath the Wasatch Mountains in Salt Lake City, Utah. Only 90 minutes from Los Angeles by plane, but a world away when it comes to costs and
overhead.
